Our Solution: Economy
Haiti’s GDP per capita is US $820, or six percent of the global average. OsierCarbon pays its employees 170% of the standard wage in our sector.
OsierCarbon has already established a large nurseryin Leogane, with six full-time employees and up to thirty temporary workers during planting programs. As experts in tree husbandry and agricultural practise, we’re in a unique position to help farmers boost output from crops-typically fruit trees, cane sugar and maize. One of our own CSR initiatives is to teach local farmers methods to increase production and reduce their environmental impact. This will help reduce the requirement for fruit and vegetable imports, and potentially open up export markets.
Once our plantations are established, we’ll sustainably farm moringa tree leaves to create high quality feedstock for animals. Moringa leaves are incredibly nutritious – it is one of the few foods that contains all nine essential amino acids. Not only that, but in the optimum ratio for human and animal consumption. By converting them into feedstock, we can reduce Haiti’s reliance on meat imports. Because they are full of amino acids, moringa leaves can be used in hundreds other products.
We plan to develop these businesses off the back of our planting program, providing long-term jobs, income and economic security to the communities where we work.
